Should I upgrade my Mac or replace it? A Novice perspective.
Should I upgrade or replace my Mac is the question? A Novice perspective.
When I became an Apple user a while back and I found the technical jargon very confusing I thought it would be nice to speak to others that had the same issue. As a result anything about upgrades from the SSD, and RAM just to mention a few had to be examined. (if you’re new to Apple upgrades click here). The first time I saw the inside of a Mac was eye-opening. I saw what a battery and logic board looked like. So if you a novice like me let’s unpack and find out if you should upgrade or buy new.
The question is to upgrade or not?
The word upgrade means a lot more than just the word. It could mean a hardware or software upgrade. Let’s look at the difference between Hardware and Software.
Hardware:
Hardware includes an SSD (Solid State Drive) and RAM (random-access memory) replacement. RAM is essentially short-term memory where data is stored as the processor needs it. SSD not only increases the amount of storage available but it can also improve the speed. It can actually extend the life of an older computer for years.
Software:
The operating system is the main software that lets you browse the web, type with your keyboard, or draft a document. The OS is called macOS.
An OS upgrade fixes issues in your current operating system and keeps things current. OS system upgrade is necessary to maintain your computer’s stability. It also ensures that your system is up to date with the latest technology. It is relatively easy to install but rather contact a professional if you are not sure.
How do you know if your Mac can be upgraded? There are various programs to assist you when you provide your serial number.
Most models from 2017 or older have a memory upgrade option. The later models can’t be upgraded as their memory is soldered on.
The conclusion:
Another reason to hang on to your older mac as it is upgradeable and you can increase your RAM (if possible for your mac) SSD and OS system when you need it. So there is definitely a plus to upgrading your mac.
From experience, I have found people to be very satisfied with their old Macs after upgrading them. So in a nutshell they have saved financially as the new Macs are pricey and they can keep their mac around for some years to come. Almost like having an old friend around.
The question is to replace my Mac or not?
Apple computers cost a lot more than some PC’s, but they are worth their high price when you consider the value you get for your money. The fact that there are regular software updates and bug fixes to keep your Mac safe is another reason for choosing Apple Macs. User experience is an important factor to decide what type of computer to buy.
The latest on offer is the new Mac Studio, 24″ iMac, and 14″ and 16″ MacBook Pros.
With a stunning new Liquid Retina XDR display and powerful processing power not to mention impressive battery performance the MacBook Pros are set to make an impact.
So finally if your circumstances have changed and you are in the market to buy any of the above new Macs on offer do your homework before choosing as upgradability is limited.
If you decide to upgrade or to buy new you have the best on the market to take your business to new heights.
