The process to replace the hard drive with an SSD or upgrade your 27″ Apple iMac. Updated 2022
The process to replace the hard drive with an SSD or upgrade your 27″ Apple iMac.
What is the process about?
It is about removing the hard drive and replacing it with an SSD or upgrading the present SSD.
If you are one of those do-it-yourself people I would suggest you look at the following before attempting it.
Replacing the hard drive requires separating the display and moving the left speaker as well as installing the SSD’s temperature sensor so that the fans will run at the correct speed.
Here is a short step-by-step process on how it is done.
1. Remove the screen and be very careful handling it as it is heavy and made of glass with fragile edges. Then remove all the old tape carefully.
2. Once open move the speaker panel to the side.
3. Replace the old hard drive with the new one/SSD after removing it.
4. After installing the new drive reset the speaker into its original place.
5. Align the new tape with the frame and avoid covering the camera with tape.
6. Peel off the backing of the tape and replace the screen by lowering it into place after attaching the necessary cables.
Finally:
Even if doing it yourself will save you money in the short term anything can go wrong and that could be a very costly exercise as the screen can easily break and then have to be replaced.
