Should I upgrade my MacBook Air and what does it entail? Updated 2022

What does an upgrade mean for your MacBook Air?

An Upgrade entails either replacing the Hard Drive with a solid-state drive  (SSD) and replacing the random-access memory (RAM)  where possible with a bigger one, and lastly upgrading your Operating System.

The reason to consider an upgrade is to improve performance, and storage and to access upgraded programs.

SOLID-STATE DRIVE (SSD)

A solid-state drive (SSD) is a new generation of storage devices. It is much faster than a traditional hard drive. Most models from 2017 and older have Hard Drive upgrade options.  When you replace the Hard Drive with an SSD it can be up to 10 times faster.  An SSD offer much faster data access than a Hard Drive and are less susceptible to physical damage as they contain no moving parts.

When your mac is getting slower,  and you’re running out of space plus you want to upgrade to a new Operating System it is time to consider upgrading your Mac.

RANDOM-ACCESS MEMORY (RAM)

RAM is short-term memory where data is stored. More storage allows you to store more things on your computer. Some Macs cannot increase their RAM after purchase. So it is important to choose correctly when buying a new Mac.

OPERATING SYSTEM SOFTWARE(MACOS)

The reason why you should upgrade is to get access to new features. If you want to upgrade your macOS there are a few things to consider.

There are various options available. Your Mac will determine which one is suitable for your Mac. From Catalina, Big Sur, and Monterey.

Even if upgrading is free rather ask a professional as you can end up with a  frozen screen and your Mac can crash if there is not enough storage on your Mac to do so.

The general requirements are 4GB of memory, and 12.5GB of available storage, it could require an Apple Id and a compatible internet service provider.

Here is a list of SSD and RAM upgrades for your MacBook Air.

MacBook Air 2010-2012: 1TB SSD No RAM

MacBook Air 2013-2017: 2TB SSD No RAM

MacBook Air 2018-present: No upgrades

Conclusion:

By upgrading your MacBook Air you can ensure your Mac is still good to face the challenges of speed and memory for your business without having to replace it with a newer version and spending extra money. The MacBook Air is a nice compact addition to your daily life.
